Oncology and Caring for the Whole Patient

Posted by: Dr. Edward Crane - M.D.

Patients and friends often ask me why I went into oncology. My explanation is that it allows me to be a specialist but still provide care for the whole person. Being diagnosed with cancer carries physical, emotional and economic challenges for the patient, and I appreciate the bond that forms between the patient and physician in these difficult situations.

Oncology is on the cutting edge of medicine specifically regarding the increased delivery of personalized care. The understanding of cell function and genetic factors has major implications regarding how to determine the best treatment for an individual patient. I feel fortunate to be part of OHC where we can offer clinical trials that help expand patient care opportunities and promote a better understanding of how to treat future cancer patients.

It’s essential to communicate and provide patients and caregivers with the education about oncology so they are able to manage concerns regarding the diagnosis. By educating patients and caregivers, we allow for improved continuity of care outside of the office setting. The formation of this blog will allow myself and other OHC physicians to lend this type of support, and as a group, we look forward to continuing our dialogue with you, our readers.
